What we do

People go into teaching math because they like math and they like teaching. Once they're working, they're swamped with teaching with little or no time to have fun doing math. Since many if us felt we didn't have enough mathematics in our professional lives, we formed a math club for teachers. We get together regularly and have fun doing math. We find the company encouraging and thinking about mathematical challenges rejuvenating. We return to our classrooms with more enthusiasm, new insights, and always with a better understanding of the mathematical practices and fundamental concepts we're trying to pass on to our students.

The Cincinnati Math Teacher circle is a group of teachers committed to establishing a culture of problem solving among middle school and high school math teachers in the Cincinnati tri-state area. By fostering the confidence to tackle open-ended math problems, we help ourselves to become better equipped as teachers to initiate more student-centered, inquiry-based strategies in our classrooms.

Goals -

The goals of our math circle are: (1) To engage math educators in mathematical problem solving; (2) To establish a community that promotes an ongoing dialogue about math with students, colleagues, and professional mathematicians; and, (3) to provide guidance, materials, and resources to math educators that will enable them to promote open-ended problem solving as a way of learning, thinking about, and practicing mathematics in their classrooms.

Needs -

There is a need for worthwhile, content-based professional development, mathematical practice and growth

Methods -

We'll meet regularly to work together at solving interesting problems. Our Math Teachers' Circle meetings will also include discussions and reflections on classroom connections of the math we work on, and the Common Core mathematical practices. Our target audience are teachers grades 7-10, but all grade-level teachers are welcome to attend. We will also encourage pre-service and retired teachers to attend.

Our Circle is an organization of mathematics educators committed to improving mathematics education in our region by helping to provide teachers with the skills and information they need to deliver modern curricula, address new state standards and initiate studened-centered, inquiry-baed instructional strategies in their classrooms. (The need for these changes... NCTM, CCSI)

We're often meeting with the Math Tech User Group so our content will include some use of tech; we need to pick a puzzle/challenge/question that is open ended but can at least partially be addressed with the tech we'll be playing with. The points on circles will be great; there's lots of Ggb things to do along those lines.
  3. Name tags! Dang I forgot about this. We have some around the house somewhere and I'll bring 'em if I find 'em. Otherwise, we put them on the list for future meetings at least . What about low tech things like paper? Will people bring that do you think? I'll grab at least a little. (sep)

I wish I'd thought of this before: We can get copies of things like old ACT/Achievement/AP exams, extract a few items worthy of significant discussion, solve them as in multiple ways a group, and then talk about where the skills to answer such things are acquired in modern curriculae

Is there interest/need for things like software to format mathematics, generate figures, assemble everything into a single document or do you figure everyone has already worked out some system that suits them and meets their needs?

  1. Credit issue still to be resolved though we can certainly issue a "statement of participation" through the UC math department. Is that (a certificate from UC) enough for people to get PD hours? We were saying that participation in some number (3?) of sessions amounts to a day(?) of PD. 12.5 hours is the magic number (swp)
  2. Summer Dates and venue? Can we piggyback on something else going on locally? What about the Midwest Regional GeoGebra Conference? (swp) That sounds good to me provided we think is synchs with active participant's interests. If folks tend to be more "clever proofs/induction/?? oriented we could think of something else so let's see who shows up(sep)

9 oct 2011. As you can see I moved lots of messages and TODO's from the home page here and formatted the home page to make it something we can refer new folks to.

llb...I worked on the flier...wondering if we should include something about level...or is unstated better...
I(sep) thnk our intention is that the level will be appropriate for anyone teaching middle or high school math
I guess we REALLY need to decide on a date and start advertising etc.

I also(18 sept) sent out a handful of invitations to join this wiki (through the wiki) to some ex-MATers. Nothing resulted from those emails so I sent (23 Sept) email from my account rather than through this wiki asking about 8 people to consider joining us. We'll see... If you've just joined us, edit this document and add your name/indicate you interest somewhere....

Late October, Early November? 10-29?
I already have two Math Tech User Group meetings scheduled. One is 10-29. The other is 11-19.
What If we run a Math Circle in conjunction with one of these. They typically go from 8:30 - 11:00. We could go 8:30 - 12:00. (That's fine if the tech people don't mind or if we pick a couple questions that have obvious tech to be applied. I'd go for Oct as mid Nov folks are worried about turkey)
