Cincy Math Teachers' Circle Spring 2013

When: Sat 20 April 9:00 - 12:00
Where: Madeira High School (If you get to the parking lot, you'll see signs for where we meet)

If you'll be able to attend, plesae let us know by registering at
http://aprilcincymathcircle.eventbrite.com/
so we'll know how much coffee, how many snacks to have on hand.

Session Chairs: Steve Ph and Linda B

Topic/Title: Geometry

Abstract: We'll look at the symmetries of regular geometric figures and build models of them.

Geometry!

Today we started off by trying out some tools to build squares, cubes, and equilateral triangles.

Then we worked out a table for the operation of combining "laser benders" of 3 lasers and noticed that this was the same thing as the symmetries of a 60-60-60 triangle.

We talked about 4-laser laser benders, the symmetries of a a square.

A discussion followed that considered questions related to Core Content standards and especially to "math process" standards. We thought and talked about what activities can help us communicate, illustrate the process standards. Characteristics that make an activity or assignment especially good for this? "Low floor, high ceiling" and "open middle" were phrases we used.
